2010 Laurel Glen Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
California, USAA special allocation for Coravin, just 10 cases to sell then it's gone!
From Coravin's Resident "Wine Guy" William Rohlfing:
What a treat to taste! Laurel Glen has been making exemplary Mountain-Grown wines since their first release in 1977. There’s a trick though-it’s Sonoma Mountain, not Napa! An underappreciated locale, Sonoma Mountain is the Western slope of its more famous cousin, Spring Mountain in Napa. So, think of this little gem as the twin sister of Cain or Lokoya, but across the mountain peak in Sonoma!
I was also very pleased to see that this is a library release of the famous 2010 vintage-a vintage that asked for time in bottle, and now we have taken care of that part! Just beginning to enter the second period of life in bottle, the 2010 Laurel Glen is loaded with blackberry jam and cassis on the nose, with a first hint of graphite as well. Everything has had time to fully integrate and balance on the nose. Cooked black plums show up here as well, without seeming sweet. On the palate, the wines builds to being full bodied and spicy while still exhibiting the soft shouldered tannin structure that makes Sonoma Cabernet so beguilingly friendly. And oh so long! Flavors build and persist for almost a whole minute, and the sexy tannin texture stays around even longer.
With an original production of under 1000 cases this is an opportunity to score a special bottle that is just beginning to mature-and all the work has been done for you! We have a special allocation of a scant few cases for the connoisseur who wants to explore off the beaten path and find a true gem.
And my favorite part? This wine still has many years left in bottle! Take out your Coravin and have a taste today and follow the progression over the next few years. An adventure in a bottle!
Tasting notes:
Dark purple and opaque, bright wine. On the nose, graphite and fresh dug earth come out first, followed by cooked blackberries and plums-cooked but not confected. Spice on the palate! Spice spice spice! More of the same cooked black fruit and well integrated oak balanced by smooth shouldered, mouth filling tannins. On the second sip, crushed granite minerality and bittersweet chocolate find their way to the fore. Truly a beautifully balanced Cabernet.
This wine is youthful but still rich with a firm structure, a dusty minerality and racy acidity that illustrate its mountain fruit heritage! This wine should age beautifully
