This wine is a staff favorite!! If you love a robust Calfornia cab, you will love this muscular, dark fruit, incredibly well balanced wine. And it's a tremendous value! Stock up and serve to your guests! You won't be sorry!

On the nose, this 100% Syrah wine is an explosion of black fruit, blackcurrant, blackberries, jammy red fruit, followed by notes of leather and tobacco. On the palate, licorice dominates by the youth of the wine, to which is added a slight oakiness and notes of toast and smoky. Fleshy and very fresh. This wine has silky, round tannins that hint at a promising future. A Crozes capable of evolving well over time. But which, for the impatient, can be enjoyed now to take advantage of its characteristic fruitiness.

Domaine Gilles Robin

Crozes Hermitage, Northern Rhone, France

First planted in 1946 by Albéric Bouvet, grandfather of Gilles Robin, on the top terroirs of the Estate (Rochas, Monico, and Terres rouges). Low yielding vines of 50+ years.

Grapes are hand-harvested. Three terroirs are vinified separately: half destemmed, partial whole cluster, use only native yeasts. Blended together after a year’s ageing in barrels and demi-muids (600L), 20% new.

With a family history of winegrowing spanning four generations, Gilles Robin started in the wine business the way many in the Rhône do: His family sold grapes to the local cooperative. Nestled against the hillsides of Hermitage and St. Joseph in the appellation of Crozes–Hermitage, the estate was first planted in the late 1940s by Gilles’ grandparents, and it is this fruit that makes up his Cuvée Alberic Bouvet, named for his grandfather. This cuvée is aged in oak barrels, of which 20% are new. The Cuvée Papillon is the product of vines Gilles planted in 1996; it is aged entirely in tank to preserve its fresh and delicate fruit. The estate now totals 37 acres, including two and a half planted with white varietals and a small parcel of Syrah in St. Joseph. His vines are planted in the stony and sandy La Terrace de Chassis district. An understated, meticulous winemaker, Gilles farms his plots organically, believing this is the best way to honestly give voice to the terroir. Gilles Robin has truly elevated his family estate, producing wines that are powerful, elegant and precise — excellent representations of Crozes–Hermitage.
